Beginners Improv Classes in Newcastle
Trying something new can feel daunting – especially if it involves other people.
Our Beginners Improv classes are designed for people who are curious about improv but may have never done it before. They’re playful, sociable and supportive, with no pressure to perform and no expectation to be funny.
Beginners is run as a fun, friendly course of 6 weekly classes, giving you time to feel comfortable, supported and gradually build confidence.
Most people may arrive feeling a bit nervous, but soon they’re having too much fun to notice!
Is this for me?
This course is for you if:
• you’ve never tried improv before
• you want to build confidence in everyday life
• you’d like to meet new people in a creative and sociable setting
• you’d like to calm a busy mind and be more present
• you want to improve communication and connect more easily
• you’re curious, creative, or simply fancy trying something different
• you’ve done improv years ago and would like a friendly way back in
You don’t need any performance experience.
You don’t need to be quick–witted or loud.
You don’t need to “be funny”.
Improv is collaborative – you learn together.
What happens in a session?
Each session lasts two and a quarter hours (with a short break in the middle) and follows a structured flow.
You’ll take part in:
• playful group games
• paired and small–group exercises
• short improvised scenes (at your own pace)
The focus is on listening, responding and supporting each other – not on being clever or getting laughs.
Along the way, you’ll start to build skills that carry beyond the room, including confidence, presence, communication, adaptability and resilience.
Common worries
“I’m not confident / I get anxious”
Most people say this. The classes are designed with that in mind.
“I don’t want to be put on the spot”
You won’t be thrown in at the deep end. Everything is gradual and optional.
“I’m not funny”
That’s fine. Improv isn’t about telling jokes – it’s about connection.
“I’ll be the worst one there”
There is no ‘best’ or ‘worst’. Improv isn’t competitive – it’s collaborative, and everyone is in this together.
“What if I don't like it?”
We want people to be here because they want to be – not because they feel stuck. If after your first session you decide the course isn’t right for you, let us know within a couple of days and we’ll refund the remaining sessions. This helps us offer the place to someone on the waiting list.
“It was as if all my anxieties had melted away.”
