School of Improv is the longest-running improv training ground in the UK. Our heartbeat is driven by the spirited, welcoming community, and our soul from the vibrant culture everyone has helped shape - from our early beginnings in 2003 to the 300+ events we run each year.
Our programme runs all year round with 7 terms that typically last 6 weeks, with a short break between times.
Classes are held at Leonardo Hotel NE1 4AD which is near Newcastle Central Station and easy to get to. Most classes are on weeknights with afternoon sessions at the weekends.
All bookings are handled through our booking system. If you already know what you're looking for, hop there to see the full schedule where you can also filter by type or day 👇

Our training runs in progressive levels. Most people start with our six-week Beginners improv course to get a solid grounding in the fundamentals. Then they gradually move through Improvers, Headway and Ensemble levels, as well as associated classes such as Concepts and Musical improv, which can be booked flexibly with a pass. We also offer Taster classes before the start of each term.
Taking part in showcases is optional. Some students are fulfilled by the classes and enjoy watching others play. No one has to perform and not everyone wants to. For those who want the thrill of playing to live audiences 🤩 we offer Performance opportunities from level 2 onwards. Players slots can be booked through our booking system.
We present around 12 Showcases a year at Newcastle venues such as Alphabetti, Live Theatre, Cumberland Arms and The Stand Comedy Club. Shows are usually announced about a month in advance.
